WEEKEND EVENT PICKS: January 5th-7th
New years resolution relapses, Topshelf tunes and a black metal noise fest for your Sunday morning. Get up to date on what your schedule should be looking like this weekend.
5&A DIME PRESENTS
HICKIES & DRYHUMPS (21+)
It may be a new year, but the atmosphere at Hickies & Dry Humps will of course remain rowdily consistent: loud throwback music to dance to and all the punchbowl drinks you'll ever need. Cruise through on this Friday night, say what's up to Jay who will likely be standing out front and get plastered to the sound of what will likely be Jagged Edge or DMX playing.
FEATURING SAUL Q, JASON WATERFALLS, JULZ, DJ SENEMA
WHERE: EL CAMINO
TOPSHELF ENTERTAINMENT PRESENTS
THE CELLAR (21+)
Topshelf Entertainment is one of those names you hear often when you think about the San Diego club scene. Infamous for their "Asian Nights" at Johnny V's and the short-lived Night Shift events at Onyx in 2016, Topshelf knows their way around the Downtown crowd. It may not be my cup of tea, but Abjo and Tealideal definitely are and they deserve your attendance regardless. Don't miss out.
FEATURING ABJO, TEALIDEAL
WHERE: BASSMNT NIGHTCLUB
OUT HERE & WITHOUT WAVE PRESENTS
It definitely seems like more and more of the San Diego art scene is starting to fully mend the bridge between the scene here and over the border and we here at The Travelers Club are in full support of it. With art curated by Weird Hues and a long list of performers, make sure to make your way down south on Saturday for what will be one of the biggest events of weekend.
FEATURING SANTOS, AMAZONDOTCOM, DR. RITMO, MAIZ PALOMA + MORE
WHERE: CHAPO MARQUEZ 158, EMPLEADOS FEDERALES (TIJUANA)
PRICE: FREE (?)
HIDE & GO FREAK PRESENTS
There's a reason we chose Hide & Go Freak as the best party of 2017 and there's a reason they're already a contender for best party of 2018. Bringing down west coast legends OverDoz to San Diego, Hide & Go Freak's bounce outfit is the perfect match for the blog rap pioneers. If you don't got plans on Saturday night, come through, and if you do, cancel them and come through anyways. It's sure to be the first big show to kick off the new year.
FEATURING OVERDOZ, ANDRE POWER, SEMAJ, DAUCHE + MORE.
WHERE: SPACE BAR
HELMUTH PROJECTS PRESENTS
SLOW DEATH III: A NOISE MUSIC FESTIVAL
If you're anything like me, then you know the only thing to pair a nice Sunday morning with is an experimental noise / drone show in the afternoon. Especially when descriptors for those noise bands include "disruptive fractured crackle," "death-tape from New Orleans," and even just simply-put: "black and creepy." Nah, but foreal though, life is all about experimenting with new things and pushing the boundaries of your taste. What better way to do that than surrounded by the noise of abysmal radiating drones eating at your eardrums like maggots to flesh?
FEATURING SKRAPEZ, MONOCHROMACY, SON OF RADUL, WHITE EYES + MORE
