WEEKEND GUIDE: December 21st-December 23rd, 2018
Goth christmas themed dance parties, utopian warehouse shows, and the unprecedented comic music stylings of Thundercat and Zack Fox. This is your weekend guide for what to do and see in San Diego.
JON BLAJ PRESENTS
Black Friday: Black Christmas Edition
Sensitive Cassettes boss and darkwave connoisseur Jon Blaj is hosting another Black Friday party celebrating goth, dark ‘80s, and post-punk dance music. The night will feature live performances by Post Tropic and Mannequin, with DJ sets by Vaugn Avakian, Rob Moran, Mario Orduno and Blaj himself.
WHERE: The Casbah
Bouquet’s One Year Anniversary
Bouquet is an electronic dance party with a focus on inclusivity and creating safe spaces on the dance floor. To celebrate their one year anniversary, the party is taking over SPIN's main room with guest DJs Interstellar Funk, Mor Elian, Rhyw and the Bouquet Soundsystem. Pro-tip: anyone dressed in full drag and says "Sugar Lips" at the door gets in for free. As Bouquet says, that's the "law of the land."
HICKIES & DRY HUMPS PRESENTS
Awkward Holiday Party
If consistency is key, then Hickies & Dry Humps have the whole shit on lock. I have yet to ever attend any El Camino party they’ve thrown that didn’t have a line down the block, and that’s saying a lot for a crew that does regular nights on a weekly basis. Bring your festive spirit and drink some festive spirits at this awkward-themed event.

WIRELESS FANTASIES & WEIRD HUES PRESENTS
End Of Year Utopia
If you haven’t heard, the creative folks at Weird Hues recently opened up their own warehouse / gallery space in Chula Vista and, of course, dope events are to be expected. This one in particular is a utopian-themed warehouse party organized by Wireless Fantasies, featuring music by Bakunawa, Jelly Bebe, Ooglioo and Ghost Boy, all some of my local favorites when it comes to music. Proceeds from the event will also be donated to the Border Angels in support of the migrant caravan. Definitely don’t miss this one.

DJ BOOGIEMAN PRESENTS
Rollin Wit Tha Funk Vol. 2 No. 5
DJ Boogieman brings an all vinyl DJ set of old school jams, funk, freestyle, 90’s hip hop, and west coast G-Funk. If you ever wanted to authentically flashback to ‘90s Chicano culture, then this is your night.
WHERE: SPACE Bar
DEL BARRIO FLEAMARKET: NOCHE BUENA
Are you like me and still haven’t even begun to think about what you’re getting your loved ones for Christmas? Del Barrio Market’s got you. With dope items that range from unique vintage clothing, handmade jewelry, one-of-a-kind art pieces, and other goods, this event has got all you procrastinating mfs covered. Or you can just cruise through to enjoy some local goods, that works too.
WHERE: Barrio Logan Flea Market
JON BLAJ PRESENTS
DEATH BY DANCING
Another Jon Blaj creation, this time with a dance-centric twist featuring music from all kinds of genres. Last time I went to one of these, I was wild shmizzed on the dancefloor getting dumb loose to “Believe” by Cher, and you know what, sometimes that’s the kind of night you need.
WHERE: Whistle Stop Bar
THUMBPRINT GALLERY PRESENTS
CRAFT AND CANVAS: BEER-INSPIRED ART EXHIBITION
As someone who regretfully rarely ever ventures north of the 8 freeway, I’m glad there’s people like Thumbprint Gallery who are always holding it down for the northern side of San Diego, be it La Jolla or Oceanside. In this beer inspired show, Thumbprint will feature live music, boutique pop ups and an art exhibition inspired by San Diego’s most popular export.
WHERE: Midnight Jack Brewing Co.
MUSIC BOX PRESENTS
THUNDERCAT W/ ZACK FOX
We usually don’t post too much official official concert hall listings, primarily because major publications like the Reader and City Beat already have that covered, but this is an exception. If you’ve ever seen Thundercat do his magic or heard Zack Fox speak (ever), then you’re already well aware how wild the combo is. Don’t miss this.
