WEEKEND EVENT PICKS: March 22nd-25th
Art installations featuring real life aliens, a DJ set by the legendary Dopemo and a chance to unite the whole arts community in an effort to stop weakass Mayor Faulconer from fucking us over -- this is your weekly event picks in San Diego, as curated by Andy Internets.
THUMBPRINT GALLERY PRESENTS
ALL THINGS GOOD (21+)
I have yet to ever work with Thumbprint Gallery, but from what I know, it's comprised of two good dudes who started their gallery / shop in North Park back in the day and have since moved up to the big leagues of La Jolla's white wall establishments. Can't knock the hustle. As part of their pop-up series, the gallery will be throwing an event at Bluefoot, one of my personal favorite bars in San Diego. Slide through and appreciate a quaint Thursday night.

ARTIVIST WOMEN: CREATIVE RESPONSES
TO GENDER VIOLENCE
"This presentation will focus on the intersections between art, feminism, and activism. We will discuss the importance of art in social movements, the response of women of Color artists to gender inequality and gender violence more specifically, and why creative forms of expression are crucial to bringing visibility to the challenges women of Color face." SAN DIEGO ART INSTITUTE PRESENTS
Fecal Matter is the name of a Montreal duo famed for their unique out-of-this-world fashion sense and ambient-industrial music project. If you want a mental image of how Fecal Matter looks, just imagine 2011 Los Angeles goth, but then put it in a dystopian setting and amplify the alien look by 1000 -- it's jarring and wild and mostly crazy, but oddly beautiful. Come through to the San Diego Art Institute this Saturday and catch the duo performing a set and showing some art, as well. Plus, our good friend Umenos is curating the music, so you know it's going to be insane. Don't miss out.

HICKIES & DRYHUMPS PRESENTS
CLEAN SLATE PRE-PARTY (21+)
The last time Dopemo played a DJ set, she was four months pregnant and -- with full pride, may I add -- it was at one of our events. I don't know how anyone allowed us to subject someone in that condition to that kind of labor, but we're glad she did and we're even more glad we have the chance to finally see her play again. Hickies & Dry Humps at El Dorado is one of our favorite dance parties to attend, so ending the night with this should be a no-brainer to anyone remotely interested in fun activities.

THE SDIY COALITION PRESENTS
UNITE FOR THE ARTS
In 2017, Mayor Faulconer proposed a budget outline for the following year that contained a 31% cut to the Arts in San Diego. That translates to almost $5 million -- money which would have gone to over three dozen arts organizations in San Diego that we all know and love. A threat to San Diego art establishments anywhere is a threat to us all, and in the way the city treats the art community as it is, we can't stand to see it slashed even more. That is why The Travelers Club and many other local organizers came together to begin the SDIY Coalition, a supergroup organized to unite every corner of the DIY arts community in order to fight for a common goal. This will be our first meet up, including workshops, food and drinks, music and much more. You are all invited.

HOSTEL INTERNATIONAL PRESENTS
HOSTEL TAKEOVER ART SHOW
The Hostel Takeover changed my life when I was 16 and I don't doubt that it still has that impact to many in the present time. With two floors of art, music and crafts, this unique event is a gem in the otherwise creatively bleak streets of Downtown San Diego.

CLEAN SLATE SWAPMEET
It's spring season, which means it's time to get your shit together and start fresh. What better way to do that then attend an event dedicated to starting anew, whether it be folks selling their goods or folks buying them. Come out early and collect some candles from Mondi, some glasses from the aforementioned Mo or some exclusive gear from our friend Towndust and RTWLR -- emphasis on the come early part, we guarantee these will sell out quick.
