Small Bar opens up ownership, rebrands into upscale craft cocktail bar
(Corrections as of February 26th, 2019 noted below).
Say goodbye to another neighborhood bar (or at least what many knew of it): Small Bar, a University Heights staple since 2009, has recently expanded its ownership to include principals from Trust Restaurant Group (Trust, Hundred Proof) who plan on gutting the bar and turning it into a craft cocktail destination.
As of this past week, Small Bar has been closed for renovation following the rebrand. Renderings of the bar's new look show a sharp move away from the bar's signature dark and grungy appearance, instead opting for upscale decoration that has grown in popularity over the past few years, including a minimalist white exterior, exposed wooden beam ceiling, subway tiling, and dangling Edison bulbs. The drink menu will also undergo a facelift to make way for craft cocktails, borrowing leadership from Polite Provisions head staff.
According to reports from employees via Facebook, much of the staff, many who have worked in the business for a decade, have also been laid off. The founding owner will still continue to operate the business.
Small Bar was opened in 2009. Developed as a neighborhood watering hole, the bar and grill became popular over the years for their superb list of craft beer and unique food selection, including a Chicago style Italian Beef Sandwich, "Morbid Burger," and Beer Mac N' Cheese.
