Chicano Art Gallery announces they will be closing doors following dramatic rent increase
Barrio Logan's Chicano Art Gallery will see its final exhibit at this Saturday's Barrio Art Crawl as owners announce they will be closing doors.
Opened in 2013, the Chicano Art Gallery has long become a staple on the Logan Ave block, hosting a variety of art exhibitions, mixed media / print events, and fundraisers over the years. After a dramatic increase in rent, however, the gallery joins the growing list of Logan spaces being priced out of the neighborhood.
"It’s been a real honor to be part of something truly magical," wrote owner Cesar Castañeda on a Facebook announcement regarding the closure, "So many wonderful moments happened here at the gallery and we would like to share one final evening together with you all."
Following the news, local residents and gallery frequenters poured into the comments sharing their own memories of the space.
"I’m so sad to hear this, Cesar," one commenter wrote. "Your spot is the only place left in Logan that still gives me that vibe that takes me back to The Roots Factory. So many good memories here."
The final exhibition scheduled for this Saturday from 5pm to 10pm will feature art by Adan Castañeda, Jessica Petrikowski, David Castañeda and Cesar Castañeda, with music provided by DJ Kuts.
