San Diego native Jackie Mendoza has been an exciting artist to watch for years now. In 2017, we called her the singer of the year, and with songs like “La Luz” dropping in 2018, she only solidified her place as a nation-wide standout. Now, in 2019, the experimental pop artist, currently based in Brooklyn, is taking her music to even more daring heights with new single, “De Lejos.”

Co-produced with Rusty Santos (Animal Collective, Panda Bear), the track opens with the shimmying strum of guitar chords underneath panned vocals, initially calling to mind the imaginative folk that Mendoza has displayed in tracks before, all before the words “Tu cuerpo es un vacacion” disrupts the familiar introduction. In a deliberate shift of tone, the track suddenly enters an 8-bit bridge, completely strange in it’s juxtaposition, all before evolving into a minimalistic percussive soundscape that’s both dark and full of bounce. It’s shocking and understandably polarizing and, best of all, exciting as hell.

In describing the unorthodox process of creating the song, Mendoza said, “We transformed the sound of the ukulele and stripped down the instrumentation so the message would be the centerpiece of the song. It’s a big step out of my comfort zone, but I’m really excited about its final form.”

Listen to the single below, out now via Luminelle Recordings (a joint venture between Gorilla vs. Bear and Fat Possum). Stay tuned for more info on Jackie Mendoza and her rumored album that we are patiently hoping comes soon.
